The short version
- Under Sales Tax General Order 01 of 2026 (30 March 2026), an e-invoice issued by bona fide mistake can be cancelled, deleted or edited within 72 hours of issue.
- After 72 hours, you need the prior approval of your Commissioner Inland Revenue — or you correct it with a credit or debit note against the original FBR invoice number.
- Credit and debit notes must now themselves be issued electronically (SROs 1666 and 1667 of 2026).
- The window is short: someone needs to see the countdown on every accepted invoice, not discover it on day four.
Why this rule exists
Before March 2026, an accepted e-invoice was effectively final. Typos in a quantity, the wrong buyer NTN, the wrong rate — all of it went into FBR's records and into your buyer's input tax claim, and fixing it was slow. Businesses complained, and on 30 March 2026 FBR issued Sales Tax General Order 01 of 2026, titled Issuance of Electronic Sales Tax Invoices and Integration of Registered Persons, under sections 23(5) and 23(6) of the Sales Tax Act.
The same order also allowed registered persons to use one or more licensed integrators, resolving problems for businesses whose invoicing ran through more than one system.
What the 72-hour rule allows
A valid electronic invoice issued because of a bona fide mistake may be cancelled, deleted or edited within 72 hours of issuance. Typical genuine mistakes:
- Wrong quantity, price or unit of measure.
- Wrong buyer — or the right buyer with a wrong NTN or registration status.
- Wrong HS code, sale type or rate.
- An invoice raised twice for the same supply.
"Bona fide" matters. The window is for honest errors, not for reshaping sales after the fact. Edits are visible to FBR, and a pattern of late changes is exactly the kind of thing a risk system notices.
How to do it
- Confirm the invoice is still inside 72 hours of its issue time.
- Make the correction through IRIS or your integrator's correction feature, as your integration supports.
- Re-issue the corrected invoice to your customer with the FBR invoice number and QR code.
- Tell the buyer — their purchase records and input tax claim depend on it.
- Keep a note of what was wrong and why; it is your answer if anyone asks later.
After 72 hours
Once the window closes, you have two routes:
- Commissioner's approval. Apply to your Commissioner Inland Revenue for permission to change the invoice, under the conditions the Board specifies. This is slower and you need a good reason.
- A credit or debit note against the original invoice's FBR number — the normal commercial fix for returns, price adjustments and short supplies. Under SROs 1666 and 1667 of 2026, debit notes, credit notes and advance receipt invoices must also be issued electronically.
Don't let the window close by accident
Seventy-two hours includes weekends and holidays. An invoice raised on Thursday evening is out of time by Sunday evening. The practical fix is visibility: every accepted invoice should show how long is left, so the person who spots the mistake knows whether they can still fix it directly. Everyday Invoicing shows a live countdown on every accepted invoice for exactly this reason.
The 72-hour window only helps with invoices FBR accepted. An invoice that failed to send during an outage is a different problem — it must reach FBR within 24 hours under rule 150XC. See the digital invoicing guide.
Khulasa — Roman Urdu
Agar FBR ko bheji gayi invoice mein ghalti ho gayi hai (quantity, rate, buyer ka NTN waghera), to STGO 01 of 2026 ke tehat issue hone ke 72 ghante ke andar usay cancel, delete ya edit kiya ja sakta hai.
72 ghante ke baad Commissioner Inland Revenue ki pehle se ijazat chahiye, ya original FBR invoice number ke against credit/debit note jaari karein — jo ab khud bhi electronic honi chahiye.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel an FBR e-invoice after 72 hours?
Not directly. After 72 hours you need the prior approval of your Commissioner Inland Revenue, or you issue a credit or debit note against the original FBR invoice number.
Do the 72 hours include weekends?
The order counts 72 hours from issuance; plan on calendar hours, including weekends and holidays.
Do I need to tell my buyer when I correct an invoice?
Yes. The buyer's purchase records and input tax claim are based on the invoice. Re-issue the corrected copy with the FBR number and QR code.
